Dr. Stephen H. Craft is Professor and Dean of the Michael E. Stephens College of Business at the University of Montevallo (AL). In this capacity, he serves as senior administrator for all undergraduate business programs as well as the Masters of Business Administration (MBA). Dr. Craft serves as a member of the President’s Cabinet and provides counsel on a range of across-the-university matters. Dr. Craft has spent his academic career at the intersection of management education and the liberal arts. He has served institutions large and small, public and private, residential and commuter, building programs for students from both privileged and less privileged circumstances.
As Dean, Dr. Craft is responsible for setting strategic direction, supporting and guiding faculty and staff, administering the finances of the Stephens College, securing resources, fundraising, building corporate and community partnerships, and maintaining the academic integrity of all programs consistent with accreditation by SACSCOC and AACSB International. Dr. Craft is highly engaged with institutional and disciplinary accreditation and has served on numerous Peer Review Teams for AACSB International. He founded the Stephens College Center for Professional Practice, a conduit for internship and career placement for graduates, which is supported entirely by external funding. Under Dr. Craft's leadership, enrollment in the Stephens College has experienced significant growth.
Dr. Craft was formerly the Dean of Business Programs and held the Elton B. Stephens Professorship at Birmingham-Southern College. Previous academic experiences include serving as Department Chair at Towson University as well as holding a full-time faculty appointment at The George Washington University and a part-time appointment at the University of Maryland, College Park. Prior to academia, Dr. Craft spent years in industry holding positions responsible for product development, advertising, and brand management including positions as Senior Product Manager for First American Bank and Manager of Marketing Strategies for the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation.
Dr. Craft earned his MBA and Ph.D. at The George Washington University (Washington, DC) and holds a BA from Birmingham-Southern College.
